Proprietary trading firms pay partners for referring traders to their funded-account challenges, which is a different model to a broker affiliate program and a fast-growing one.

How prop firm affiliate programs work

A proprietary trading firm funds traders on its own capital rather than asking them to deposit their own. To get an account a trader buys an evaluation, usually called a challenge, and has to hit a profit target inside a set of risk rules before the firm will fund them. The firm makes its money from the fees on those evaluations and from a share of what funded traders go on to make.

That is why the partner side works differently to a broker program. A broker pays you a CPA when a referred client deposits and trades, or a share of the spread revenue they generate for as long as they stay. A prop firm pays you a share of the entry fee, which means the payment lands quickly, it lands once per purchase, and it lands again if the same trader comes back for another attempt.

What to compare before you promote one

The retake rate matters more than the headline commission. Most traders fail their first evaluation, so a program paying 15% on every purchase a referral ever makes is usually worth more than one paying 25% on the first purchase only. Ask which of the two you are being offered before you look at the percentage.

After that, the questions are the ordinary ones: how long the tracking lasts, when commission is released and by what method, whether paid search on the firm's brand name is allowed, and which countries the firm accepts. Prop firms are restricted differently to brokers, and a country your broker traffic converts in is not necessarily one a prop firm can take.

Forex firms and futures firms are not the same business

A forex prop firm sells a one-off challenge and funds the trader on a simulated or live forex and CFD account. A futures firm sells an evaluation and then charges a monthly or one-off fee for the funded account that follows, so the revenue behind your commission is recurring in a way the forex model is not. If your audience is futures traders, the monthly fee is the number to ask about, and if it is forex traders, it is the challenge price and the retake policy.
